Kitsap PUD board to take up Prop. 1’s defeat Nov. 10; future try would need new process

POULSBO — Kitsap Public Utility District commissioners will discuss the results of Proposition 1 at their regular meeting Tuesday, Nov. 10, as the measure that would have let the district get into the electricity business continues to trail.

The measure was failing 58.5% to 41.5% after Friday’s count, with 67,215 no votes and 47,728 yes votes, according to unofficial results from the Kitsap County Auditor’s Office. The county is scheduled to certify the election Nov. 24.

In a Nov. 4 statement, the district said the board has previously said that if the measure fails, any future consideration of electric service would require a new process, “such as a community-initiated proposition placed on the ballot in accordance with state law.”

Proposition 1 asked voters to authorize KPUD to buy or build electric facilities. The board had said it would commission a feasibility study before taking any further steps if the measure passed.

The vote does not affect KPUD’s water, wastewater and fiber internet service, the district said. Puget Sound Energy will continue to provide electricity to its current customers in Kitsap County.

KPUD’s office is at 1431 Finn Hill Road in Poulsbo. Meeting details and agendas are at kpud.org.
