BREMERTON — Olympic College students have paid for a $1 million renovation of the Building 9 locker rooms, adding private shower stalls, new lockers and laundry machines, using student fees allocated by their student government.

The Student Government of Olympic College directed the money from Services and Activities fees, the quarterly fees students pay to support campus facilities, activities and student life. The decision followed a fall 2022 student interest survey that drew 495 responses, according to the college.

Of the $1 million, $40,000 went to new lockers in the men’s and women’s locker rooms. The project also added two commercial washers and dryers, which the college said will support its athletic center and give students more laundry options on campus.

The renovated locker rooms now have private shower stalls, which the college said fills a gap in privacy and accessibility in the old facilities.

Separately, the student government set aside up to $50,000 to add gender-neutral restrooms across campus. The college said it has already added single-occupancy, lockable restrooms at several locations and plans to add more.

“Student voices helped shape these improvements, and we’re proud to invest student fees in resources that make campus more welcoming and accessible,” said BreAnna Taylor, student government president.

Olympic College President Chantae Recasner credited the student government for responding to what students asked for. “Being student centered means listening to students and responding to the needs they identify,” she said.
