Pollinator plantings replace daffodil tradition
POULSBO — Poulsbo is asking volunteers to help plant native flowering shrubs for birds and pollinating insects at two more events this fall.
The Poulsbo Pollinator Project plantings are 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at American Legion Park and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 5, at Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park, where volunteers will start a pollinator pathway. The first planting was Oct. 24 around City Hall.
The city provides plants, gloves, tools, water and snacks, though Mayor Ed Stern wrote in his “Mayor’s Corner” column in the city’s November newsletter that extra digging tools are welcome. Volunteers of all ages may take part. Children younger than 14 must be with an adult, and those 14 to 17 need a parent or guardian to sign them in and out.
The project is a partnership of Washington State University Kitsap County Extension Master Gardeners, Pearson Elementary School, the city’s Park and Recreation Commission and its Parks and Recreation Department. Stern wrote that it replaces the November daffodil bulb giveaway that ran about 15 years under former Mayor Becky Erickson, and that the city plans to hold plantings at different parks each October through December.

Salmon Tours at Fish Park Nov. 7
Poulsbo’s Fish Park, 288 NW Lindvig Way, is one of eight Kitsap Salmon Tours sites open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. The free event features biologists, environmental groups and trained guides, with guided walks and activities. Visitors at the 40-acre park along Dogfish Creek may see chum and coho salmon and cutthroat trout, according to WSU Kitsap Extension, which organizes the tours. The Fish Park site is led by the City of Poulsbo and Kitsap Public Utility District. Tours go on rain or shine. A map of all sites is at extension.wsu.edu/kitsap/water-stewardship/kitsap-salmon-tours.
Parks commission has two openings
The city is looking for residents to fill two seats on its Parks and Recreation Commission. Terms run up to three years, depending on the seat. The commission meets at 5:30 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month. Information and applications are at poulsbo.gov/boards-commissions.
Youth basketball, winter camps
Poulsbo Parks and Recreation is taking registrations for winter basketball leagues: a Middle School Girls Prep League for grades 6 to 8, which plays Sunday doubleheaders before school tryouts; elementary boys and girls leagues for grades 1 to 5; and a middle school boys league with a sixth-grade division and a seventh- and eighth-grade division. Returning elementary players who want to stay on last year’s team should sign up by Nov. 9. Teams are formed as registrations come in and may start practicing as early as the week of Dec. 1.
The department also has more than 20 winter break camps, including dance, fired arts, musical theater, gymnastics, pickleball, flag football and volleyball. Register at poulsbo.gov/register or 360-779-9898.
Through a partnership with Fishline, the Recreation for All Assistance Program helps pay for classes, camps and activities for people who live or work full time in the North Kitsap School District, at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, or who are experiencing homelessness. Participants must be registered Fishline clients and should contact a Fishline navigator at 360-779-5190 before registering.
City Hall closures
Poulsbo City Hall will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day and Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27, for Thanksgiving.
